my brother sent me a link to this slideshow about the movie the help.
set in mississippi in 1963 The Help tackles heavy issues and stays true to the look and feel of the era in every way. while the movie made us cry, the clothes and furnishings made us swoon. here’s how to bring a little southern charm into your home and wardrobe.
yep, nothing like that good ol’ racist 1960’s southern charm. it’s based on the book and it’s about being a black maid working in a white household, but all this slideshow does is go, “yeah, all that stuff was bad, but hey, those mean white ladies wore some nice dresses right? and weren’t the kitchens they never used pretty awesome looking? why not try and capture that look for yourself?”
look at that last caption, “at your service”? oh my god, i mean it’s just like, “hey maybe it was pretty cool when civil rights weren’t a thing, you know? i mean white and black people came out of it alright. why not put on this nice dress and pretend you’re back there? throw a garden party with your gal pals and imagine your maid is in the house raising your kids and whipping up some mint juleps, life was pretty sweet.” it’s like that banana republic mad men thing, only this is all about race.
